Bill Frisell was extraordinary in trio last night at the Village Vanguard. After hearing ill reviews of his recent work, my caution had been peaked. To my delight, he shined with sensitivity and mature skill. His undulating, surreal tones were hypnotizing, compelling me wonder how one instrument could produce the richness of bass, rhythm, and lead.
