I heard that story of Sam Rivers decking Stanley Crouch was true, not from Sam but from an associate of his in Orlando. They must've made up eventually -- Stanley was having a grand old time hanging out at one of Sam's 75th birthday shows at Sweet Basil's a few years ago. He was a lot more amusing than his writing. Has anyone else heard the story of Stanley, back in the day, announcing that as a writer, he could make a star out of anyone, and selecting the young David Murray for this display of potency? Parry

No, but it would sure explain a lot. sh
Parry: Haven't heard that story per se. But from what I remember from Crouch's writing in the Village Voice in the 1970s --and the infor on a profiel on him in the New Yorker a few years ago -- he was certainly capable of making that boast. Whether he could carry it through is another matter. Gary Giddins does continue to have a soft spot for Murray -- as does the Voice-imitative music section of unfriendly-to-jazz NOW, Toronto's so-called alternative weekly. Murray has done some excellent work live and on record, but also some really sloppy stuff -- too many alimony payments is the cause I hear.
