Drummers... (and a bit of Terry Bozzio)
Hi y'all... I've been a drummer for most of my life, and now my little brother is getting into it. He asked me which essential drummers he should check out. I think it's been discussed in the past, but I'm sure in the meantime some of you have got some new input/ ideas. Of course I recommended some of the guys I admire: Tony Williams, Joey Baron, Elvin Jones, Boris Williams (ex The Cure), Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater), Terry Bozzio (btw: check out some of his mental solo videos here: http://www.vicfirth.com/artists/bozzio/mediaframe.html ); and some people I have heard you talk about like Hamid Drake and Susie Ibarra. Any more ideas? (Looking forward to your replies, since they are always helpful and interesting!) patRice np: Terry Bozzio, Drawing The Circle nr: Haruki Murakami, The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle
Apart from what you mentioned, I'd have to say Jim Black, definitely one of my favourites - check out Dave Douglas' Tiny Bell Trio, Peter Epstein's Quartet, Pachora or his own band AlasNoAxis...

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Bill Stewart. I don't think there's a more creative jazz drummer out there today, though his choice of projects doesn't always inspire me. Also, Alex Cline is amazing but unfortunately he doesn't get outside of Los Angeles much. -JC

I totally second all of these plus the Jim Black recommendation. One of the greatest drummers I've ever heard/seen, with a style that's totally his own throwing in influences from jazz, rock, drum'n'bass, basically anything in a very unorthodox, spectacular and entertaining playing. BTW, I seize the opportunity to recommend Ellery Eskelin's Trio DVD. It's a fantastic document, really amusing, and if features solo playing by the Eskelin, Parkins and Black, all of them astounding performances. Lovely document. And the Sonic Youth DVD "Corporate Ghost" is fantastic, as well!!
and some people I have heard you talk about like Hamid Drake and Susie Ibarra.
You can't go wrong with these two. I'd also add a very creative drummer, Tom Rainey, basically known for his collaborations with Mark Helias and Tim Berne's Paraphrase, Big Satan and Science Friction. Milford Graves is a classic free-jazz drummer with amazing recordings with Paul Bley, Albert Ayler (no less) and Zorn, among many others. He also has two solo albums on Tzadik which are excellent. Chad Taylor is a very elegant and versatile drummer from Chicago. You can spot him with Fred Anderson, the Chicago Underground bands, his own Titration group, Sam Prekop "s/t" (Thrill Jockey- great album!), etc... I recently saw Paal-Nilssen Love with Ken Vandermark's FME and left astounded. Nothing really original but truly resourceful and spectacular as well. Tatsuya Yoshida -from Ruins- is one of the most amazing solo concerts I've ever seen. What he does IS plainly impossible! Eric Echampard is an great French jazz drummer with a bit of rock energy. You can find him in some of Marc Ducret's albums, and "L'Ombra di Verdi" (Screwgun) is particularly recommendable, imho. Jack deJohnette with Miles, Leo Smith's Golden Quartet, ... basically anyone. Rashied Ali on Coltrane's "Interestellar Space", "Estellar Regions", etc... Ed Blackwell with Ornette Coleman's Quartet. Paul Lytton, who I saw with Ken Vandermark, nonstoppable. I was lucky to see Medeski Martin and Wood recently and couldn't believe how good Billy Martin sounds live. Not only is he an amazing drummer, but also a lot of fun to see. Too long an e-mail. Sorry! Best, Efrén del Valle n.p: Fantomas "April 5th, 2004- NYC" (bootleg)

Another one to mention is who I'm listening to right now, Bobby Previte. His playing may not be for everyone since he has a tendency to "take over" the band but he is amazing. Very powerful and precise drumming. Gerry Hemingway would be another of my favorites. Didn't get into him as much until I saw DrumBassBone live, they were amazing, all 3 of them. ===== Ken My DAT List: http://www.tapercities.com/Jambands/bodekkc/datlist.html My CDR List: http://www.tapercities.com/Jambands/bodekkc/cdrlist.html
