yeah, I too just caught Bump at Yoshi's and thought it was excellent. The writing and playing were both superb.....a great balance of elements: groove, freedom, repetition, silence, etc....Ep(isod)ic pieces that really go somewhere, often ending in a totally different place from where they began. Bobby played a great brand new piece called 498 Soul, to be included on the album the band will record next week. and, speaking of Zappa...there is a nice selection on Previte's electronic sampler CD that is reminiscent, at the outset, of "Playground Psychotics"-- an amusing field recording made on tour featuring Bobby's inquiry about a hotel's hot tub. I think they are in Portland tonight. --graham connah

Previte talks about his new electronics fetish and a number of other things (including a new band with Mat Maneri that I'd love to hear) in the new issue of Jazz Times, a "drummers issue" that has Elvin Jones on the cover and also includes an article about Hamid Drake.
Steve Smith ssmith36@sprynet.com (grateful for the new rush of activity on the Z-list, even if he's been too busy to participate much, let alone respond to a very kind personal note from John Threadgould, about which he's growing increasingly embarassed...)
