I'm looking for some interesting female vocalists for a singing friend of mine, for the moment I'm looking more in the 'interesting pop' vein (Bjork, Laurie Anderson) than moving into really experimental or modern classical stuff. Any recommendations? Any recommendations for PJ Harvey albums? Thanks, Julian.
I'm a fan of Jennifer Charles (Elysian Fields, Lovage). She participates on an album, La Mar Enfortuna, on Tzadik which I haven't heard. I also like Miho Hatori. You can check her out with Cibo Matto and her collaboration with Beck's guitarist. I think she did some vocals for Gorillaz, too, if I'm not mistaken. Some of Robin Holcomb's work would probably fit into this category, especially her first Nonesuch album or Rockabye. -- Caleb Deupree cdeupree@erinet.com
i'm kinda partial to Buffy Sainte-Marie myself. it's on the folkier side of the spectrum though. rgrds aaron __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! - Official partner of 2002 FIFA World Cup http://fifaworldcup.yahoo.com
Aiko Shimada. Her latest CD, The Blue Marble is nothing less than stunning. Is it OK that it's all sung in Japanese? Dave
Seconded. "Blue Marble" (Tzadik) is a great and fantastic record, also there's an amazing role by Eyvind Kang on violin, viola, bass and loops throughout. By the way it's her first cd, isn't it? She has a number of earlier albums on her own Bera records. Of those, I highly recommend "Another Full Moon", her 2000 release. Aiko and her husband, bassist Mark Collins are old friends of mine, and it's been great to see them doing such wonderful music. -- ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dave Trenkel New and Improv Music http://www.newandimprov.com improv@peak.org -------------------------------------------------------------------------

Somehow I forgot Dagmar Krause, whose work with Henry Cow and the Art Bears was nothing short of amazing (esp Art Bears Winter Songs and Cutler/Glandien Domestic Stories); and Amy Denio, another singer who worked with Cutler & crew. Denio started with the Tone Dogs, a band from Seattle that had a couple of excellent releases but which are not out of print. However, two of her works with Chris Cutler are well worth checking out, the (EC) Nudes and the Science Group. -- Caleb Deupree cdeupree@erinet.com
