Also I was looking for Penderecki's Threnody for the victims of Hiroshima. But none of the people in the store knew this piece.
It's marginally obscure these days, perhaps, but you got bum advice. There's a perfectly fine recording of the piece on Naxos... Volume One of the label's Penderecki series, paired with the nearly-as-raucous Fluorescences and De natura sonoris II and the more conservative Symphony No. 3. Catalog number is 8.554491.
Also I saw very cheap boxsets by EMI-classics. Among others, complete symphonies by Sibelius 8 cdboxset costs about the normal price of one cd!
Many of those EMI box sets are worthwhile, and Paavo Berglund's Bournemouth/Helsinki Sibelius cycle is one of the foremost. Steve Smith ssmith36@sprynet.com NP - Barry Guy New Orchestra, "Part VII," 'Inscape-Tableaux' (Intakt)
