Most essential, personally and by general consensus, is his stuff with the so-called Webster/Blanton band, from the late 30s to early 40s. I think there's a two-disc set out called Duke Ellington, The Webster/Blanton Band, or years, or maybe the Blanton/Webster band or years. ... Terrific stuff.... But especially since you are interested in the jungle music, why not spend $93 and get the complete 1924-1947? "The Duke: Edward Kennedy Ellington" (History), 40 CD box set. CDuniverse.com and elsewhere. Rafael queried: Someone was talking about Duke development towards what was called in the 30's as jungle music. I used to listen to that when I was a child and it was a thrill, but I haven't any of his recordings of that period. Suggestions ? (good compilations or similar) Talking about Marion Brown, I love "why not" and i haven't heard to three for shepp but I'd like to. What about "Porto Novo"? Cheers Rafael
I totally agree with Martin that the Blanton/Webster Band is a great starting place for an Ellington collector, but that material really post-dates the Jungle Band period. I'm sure the 40CD set has all that stuff, but I haven't heard it, so I can't vouch for it. What I have heard that I can recommend is "Early Ellington", the 3CD set on GRP. This set is all the Brunswick and Vocalion recordings from 1926-1931. Some of the 78s used for this set are kind of skanky, but the transfers are clean and it has a 52 page book of liner notes. Better yet is "The Original Edward "Duke" Ellington Hits", 2 volumes on King Records. That set sounds really beautiful, but I have no idea where you'd find a copy at this point. Hi gang: I'll second Dave's choice and add to it however CBS has repackaged what was the 3-LP set The Ellington Era Volume One 1927-1940 (C3L 27). Boy those numbers show how long ago I bought the LPs. The interesting thing about Ellington at that point is that you can hear and compare multiple versions of his first "hits" like "East St. Louis Toodle-oo" on both the GRP and CBS sets. I saw an announcement for the final box set in the Miles reissue project entitled "Seven Steps to Berlin" due out in September. What period (i.e. albums) will this set cover? Zach
CD Universe has two new Zorn albums set for release this month. Environment for Sextet and USA Concerts East. Both on Dunya, of which I've never heard. What are these? They appear to be early Zorn improv stuff. Zach
Hi, I just know "Environment for Sextet", which I'd swear had already been reissued several years ago and it's 100% improv. I can't recall what the actual line-up, but I'm quite sure Andrea Centazzo was on it. It's basically from the Chadbourne/Bradfield/Kaiser/etc-era, so if you enjoyed "The Parachute Years" stuff, go for it!
