>> has anyone picked this up? Care to review it? I know that this band has played around a bit, I am really into what dave did encorporating electronics into witness, I have high hopes for this new album. thanks jt<< I like the cd a lot. Definitely one of his better ones. What to say that Steve hasn't said? It's very rhythmic and driving although there are quieter sections as well. Joey Baron really shines here. Some of the best drumming that I've heard from him in awhile. You get to hear Douglas play a lot of tasty muted trumpet. He's even listed on keyboards although its hard to figure who's playing what. He's probably doing the chordal washes of sound. Douglas's heavily treated voice is heard reading text on one rather short cut. Chris Speed and Seamus Blake play sax on alternate tracks. Speed really adds a lot to the tracks he is on, while you have to really strain to hear sax on the cuts that Blake is on. There's an extra track tacked on at the end of the cd that's not listed that's pretty trippy. Its quite different from "Witness" so its hard to say which is better. I love them both. Douglas is playing Yoshis in Oakland on Monday with the following lineup: Seamus Blake-tenor sax Jamie Saft-Keyboards David Gilmore-guitar Brad Jones-bass Dereck Phillips-drums DJ Olive- turntables Who's Dereck Phillips? Anyone familiar with him? Anyway, it should be a great show. Cheers, John Threadgould
Unless they changed the packaging after Dave showed it to me many weeks ago, the extra track is listed in very tiny print on the back cover, after the record company boilerplate info. You may need a magnifying glass! It's one of two tracks on 'Freak In' actually recorded by the post-Witness touring band with Taborn and Sarin. Dereck Phillips is best known for his work with Greg Osby and Vijay Iyer. Dave told me he was really psyched to play with him. If anyone is still interested in reading more about 'Freak In,' I've stumbled upon an "article" at jazzreview.com that's actually a truncated and slightly bastardized version of the official press bio I wrote for RCA. It's mostly accurate, though they cut out some of the best bits, my opening paragraph is now the fifth paragraph... and I would never, EVER have used the word "jazztronica": http://www.jazzreview.com/articledetails.cfm?ID=1291 (I might have taken offense that this "article" carries a byline, except that I notice the e-mail link for said "article" goes to the address "newmedia.rcavictor (at) bmg.com." Misleading, but presumably well within their rights.) Steve Smith ssmith36@sprynet.com NP - Hank Mobley, "Soul Stationm" 'Soul Station' (Blue Note RVG)

In the amazon.com review they talk about pianist Craig Taborn and turntablist Jamie Saft. Is this correct? It's a pretty lackluster review any way, but it is Amazon.com. "With taste and wit, Douglas manages to make even nonjazz sounds seem jazzy, something Miles Davis also did very well."...hmmm... Zach

Taborn and Saft both play keys on the disc, with Saft credited with loops and programming as well. No turntables on the disc, but I believe Douglas is touring with DJ Olive. They'll be in Eugene next week, and I'm planning on catching them. The disc is outstanding, it's virtually all I've listened to all week. Definitely more approachable than Witness, it has some of Douglas' nicest compositions to date, IMHO. The electronics are very tastefully done, these tunes could stand alone without the electronics, but they definitely add something cool to the arrangements.
