Can't remember if it was here or elsewhere that this came up recently, but the Godfrey Reggio films 'Koyaanisqatsi' and 'Powaqqatsi,' both scored by Philip Glass, are finally due for release on DVD via MGM on September 17. They'll be available individually ($19.98 apiece) and packaged together ($29.98). The release is timed to pump up interest in the third movie in the trilogy, 'Naqoyqatsi,' due in theaters on October 2 via Miramax with the soundtrack to follow October 8 on Sony Classical. Glass's 'Naqoyqatsi' score is one of the more interesting things he's done recently, BTW. It's a veritable concerto for Yo-Yo Ma (and given their track record with commissioning concert arrangements of film scores, like John Corigliano's 'Red Violin' Concerto and Tan Dun's 'Crouching Tiger' Concerto, I'd expect Sony Classical to exploit it as such before long), and it doesn't break any new ground stylistically -- why would we expect that at this point? But timbrally and in terms of orchestration, there are some wonderful things in it. Steve Smith ssmith36@sprynet.com

Talking about Glass there is a very good record of his early compositions: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ *** - MUSIC IN THE SHAPE OF A SQUARE: Philip Glass 1/ Music In Similar Motion (1969) (Glass) 12:38 2/ Strung Out (1967) (Glass) 14:28 3/ Piece In The Shape Of A Square (1968) (Glass) 11:27 4/ Gradus (1968) (Glass) 10:19 5/ Music In Contrary Motion (1969) (Glass) 28:35 Alter Ego: Manuel Zurria (flute), Paolo Ravaglia (clarinet), Francesco Peverini (violin), Francesco Dillon (cello), Oscar Pizzo (keyboard), Gianluca Ruggeri (marimba). 2001 - Stradivarius (Italy), STR 33602 (CD) Note: (3-5) are first recordings of these pieces. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ What makes the record very special (besides the first recordings), is that it was recorded live in 1999 in Italy. The program of the concert and the setting were the ones used by Glass for his debut concert in NYC in 1969 at the New York Film Makers' Cinemateque! The interpretations are quite different from the originals, for example, the speed of execution is slower. Lovers of early Glass should enjoy that record. Patrice. PS: "Music In Contrary Motion" is, I guess, the ensemble version of "Contrary Motion".
