is this an actual jazz/music venue with a really bad name or a fast-food joint?
It's both!

Slightly less flippantly, Pizza Express is a chain of pizzerias in the UK. I rather like them, but I know some people don't. Several of them around the country put on local jazz musicians, but the one you've probably heard of is the original one in Dean Street, Soho, where they've put live music on in their basement since the sixties. It's kind of like a staging post between the expense-account wankers at Ronnie Scott's and the groovy music but car-park ambience of Camden's Jazz Cafe. There are people there that just appear to want to ignore "some Jazz" while they eat their Pizza, but then there are some aficionados who enjoy what they're listening to. Fellow z-lister Dave and I went there on two consecutive nights last year to see The Necks, which was a brave thing to put on there I feel (although it did sell out). Bill Frisell has played there too, but it's mainly the kind of stuff I'd pay not to see. http://www.pizzaexpress.co.uk/indexf.htm Hope this helps! Alastair -- Personalised email by http://another.com

hello, I'm curious about "no wave". I'd like some recommendations of artists/groups etc to check out. I ope to find some mp3s, as I'm curious to what it sounds like. wasn't DNA one of the 'no wave' pioneers? & arto too? is anyone doing this stuff at the Arto (it was a 70s/80s movement, right?)? are Sonic Youth "no wave"? thanks Andrew np: Derek & the Ruins - Saisoro
Teenage Jesus and the Jerks (with Lydia Lunch) and James Chance and the Contortions - he's my personal favourite from the No Wave era; kind of James Brown meets punk meets free jazz. Others can help with Mars and DNA, which I haven't gotten into. Sonic Youth is post-no wave, they are informed by No Wave (i.e. Glenn Branca's influence); they came too late for No Wave as it was a very short lived movement in the late 70s and very early 80s. Eno produced a compilation in '79 (I think) called No New York, which is a sampler of No Wave. It has Teenage Jesus, Chance, Mars, and DNA. I don't think it is available on CD, but maybe as an import? Hi, Others can help
with Mars and DNA, which I haven't gotten into.
Besides de "No NYC" album compiled by Eno, Avant released a DNA live recording that's pretty good. It delivers some of the best guitar playing I've heard from Arto Lindsay. Their goal seemed to destroy any musical form by means of total "inoperance" with their instruments, but the truth is they sound quite cohesive and far from amateur, imho. The sound is certainly primitive, but it works. A very good "rock malformation". Sonic Youth is post-no wave,
they are informed by No Wave (i.e. Glenn Branca's influence); they came too late for No Wave as it was a very short lived movement in the late 70s and very early 80s.
Yes, Sonic Youth didn't participate in the no-wave movement, but they were direct witnesses and had connections with a lot of those musicians. Ranaldo and Moore were already playing in small NYC bands (The Flux, The Coachmen, etc). Their first albums obviously reflect an influence, and Moore has always admired Lindsay's guitar approach, which was miles away from the neo-bossa stuff he's up to now. Moreover Ronaldo played on "The ascension" : Glenn Branca's non Theoretical Girls No Wave album (which is a killer if you ask me), SY was produced by Warton tiers who was coming straight from the No Wave scene and when you listen to the very first SY record on SST or "Confusion is Sex" you can't help but think they're still into it at that point. Also of interest if you're looking in that No Wave direction is Public Image Limited's three first album, which aren't No Wave per se but still very in the aesthetic of this scene. By the way... Rought trade released a very in depth 2CD compilation which is called "Post Punk" which you might wanna check to discover stuffs from that era... if your'e also interest in Mutant Disco, Proto Rap, Post Funky Punk...etc there's always "Mutant Disco" and "New York Noise", both on Soul Jazz recordings, which feature both No Wave and other weird stuffs from this time. My two cents Olivier
Speaking of James Chance, he's playing over here at the end of May (22nd). Does anyone know what to expect? Is he still in good conditions? Is his music/performance still representative with the music that made him famous? I thought I saw something of a live review on the zorn-list a couple of months ago about a performance of him on a festival (Austria? Polland? not sure...). I missed his concert in Spain last year, but I read the reviews and they were all extremely positive. He doesn't seem to have lost any of his rawness and, yes, he's still doing his punk-funk thing. He's playing in Barcelona in May and I won't miss it. Michael Gira will also be on the bill. Oh, and the Pixies reunited!
