I've been listening these last days to the JOHN ZORN MASADA LIVE: Masada CD (1995 - Jazz Door (Italy), JD 1293) which is with Kenny Wollesen on drums. Four questions: 1- Why Wollesen on drums? 2- Who is he? 3- Is it me or Greg Cohen is playing an electic bass on at least some tracks (and if yes, why?) 4- Why was this cd never released by zorn himself? 1- Why Wollesen on drums?
Several other drummers have sat in for Joey Baron. Ben Perowsky, Wollesen and Susie Ibarra are the ones I can recall.
2- Who is he? He's played with almost every Zorn-related musician and I think he's part of Electric Masada right now (could be Perowsky, now I'm not really sure). He's also played with Ellery Eskelin, Tin Hat Trio, Tom Waits, etc...
3- Is it me or Greg Cohen is playing an electic bass on at least some tracks (and if yes, why?)
It's pretty unlikely. If so, he could be willing to do so, couldn't he?
4- Why was this cd never released by zorn himself? Is it legitimate?
No, that's certainly a bootleg and think how many concerts Zorn has taped to date. What I don't really understand are his choice patterns. If we're talking about sound quality, then "Taipei" was a mistake. There could be some sentimentalism involved, I guess. Best, Efrén del Valle

Hi, The "Taipei" subject has been discussed (and argued) lots of times here. I think the repertoire and the execution are amazing but it's hard for me to discern what's going on at certain points of the recording. i find the echo unbearable and Baron is so aggressive there that I can't get an overall impression about the sound. I mean, there are many many other versions of those tunes, and listening to them without the usual sound quality reaveals another dimension of them. see, I do not want to have 'out to lunch' recorded digitally on super modern microphone hidden by some time traveller, I like it as it is.
