VoiceWAVE perform Zitt's "feldMorph" and "Tapas", Sept 10, 2002, Oakland, CA, US
Tuesday September 10th: Joseph Zitt and VoiceWAVE Morgan Guberman and Exotic Zoology VoiceWAVE is a new vocal ensemble exploring the possibilities for expression and communication in structured improvisation. For this performance, VoiceWAVE includes: Tom Bickley J. D. Buhl Brad Fischer Bob Marsh Matthew Priest Jesse Quattro Aurora Rising Katherine Setar Caroline Smith Joseph Zitt The performance will include the West Coast premiere of Joseph Zitt's score "feldMorph", as well as his "Tapas", which has also been performed by the Cornelius Cardew Choir and by other groups around the country. Both scores appear in Zitt's book "Surprise Me with Beauty: the Music of Human Systems" (http://www.josephzitt.com/books/smwb.php) "feldMorph" was composed as a tribute to the music of Morton Feldman, in an attempt to emulate his music through improvisational methods. "Tapas" creates a rapidly-changing set of improvisations by different subsets of the group. Joseph Zitt's vocal performance combines a background in traditional synagogue and world musics with a mastery of extended vocal techniques. While he often approaches performance non-verbally, focusing on the vocal sounds themselves rather than the meanings of words, he also includes moving and surprising uses of text in work that straddles the line between music and poetry. In his solo and ensemble performances and workshops, he works to create music that is both complex and clear, exemplifying the best that each person can bring to free and structured improvisation. He has performed in a wide variety of solo and ensemble contexts, including performing with the ensemble Comma in Pauline Oliveros's "Lunar Opera" at Lincoln Center in New York City, and with the ensemble Gray Code at the Knitting Factory in New York and at the 2001 Vision Festival in Washington, DC. His nationwide tour in January 2002 included a week in the Bay Area working on his scores with the Cornelius Cardew choir, which inspired his recent move to Berkeley. Since arriving, he has performed at the Luggage Store Gallery Company Nights, the TransBay Skronkathon, at the Artship Wave 9 release event at 21 Grand, and, in collaboration with Mapa Mundi, at the Berkeley Arts Center. His most recent recording is Artship CD 18, "rats, maybe ghosts". Morgan Guberman is also on the program, performing his "Exotic Zoology", a solo improvisation with a barrage of instrumentation. Morgan Guberman is a composer/performer/improviser of both instrumental and electronic solo and chamber music. His music has recieved radio play throughout the United States, Canada, Europe, Russia, Australia, and Japan. His primary instruments are the contrabass, voice, piano, electronics, and various percussive devices, including found objects. Collaborative efforts have been made with filmmakers, dancers, and performance artists.
