By the way... Rought trade released a very in depth 2CD compilation which is called "Post Punk" which you might wanna check to discover stuffs from that era... if your'e also interest in Mutant Disco, Proto Rap, Post Funky Punk...etc there's always "Mutant Disco" and "New York Noise", both on Soul Jazz recordings, which feature both No Wave and other weird stuffs from this time.
Supposedly No New York is making the rounds in shops again but I've never heard a definite answer about whether it's a legitimate reissue or not. One thing I do know is that the bands aren't seeing a cent from that. The Rough Trade Shops Post-Punk compilation does have some good No Wave cuts as does the New York Noise collection but for history and consistency, I think NNY remains the definitive No Wave statement. By the way, Lydia Lunch's HYSTERIE collection has a lot of great rare material from that time. JOHN GAVANTI is kind of 'all-star' round-up of the NW bands too- reissued on Atavistic. A 4-CD box set of James Chance (IRRESISTIBLE IMPULSE) came out last year but for beginners, BUY THE CONTORTIONS should do the trick. A Mars collection recently came out too (THE COMPLETE STUDIO RECORDINGS NYC 1977-1978) and Fjord willing, a DNA collection will be out some time this spring. Why hasn't the Beatles catalogue been released in nicely remastered versions with actual liner notes--more than a track listing and maybe some photos. With all the times albums of the same era (I'm thinking Pet Sounds and other Beach Boys releases) have been re-released, why has the Beatles catalogue, which is supposed to be so important, only gotten very bare bones--with only marginal sound--CD releases? Zach
They sell them by thousands and thousands, so I assume they don't feel the need to make an effort and offer the audience a better quality and more detailed info/artwork. We'll keep on buying them anyway. The liner notes from "Sgt. Peppers" are ridiculous for an album of such a stature and the absence of notes to the White Album, considering all the events surrounding its recording, is criminal. I guess McCartney and Yoko are still more concerned about the Lennon/McCartney-McCartney/Lennon signature quarrel.
