For slightly older stuff (one might say "middle period" now that Atavistic is reissuing the REALLY early stuff), try 'Oleo & a Future Retrospective' on hat Art - strong band, strong originals and a distinctive take on standards. A good recent spin might be one of his three Trio X sessions on CIMP/Cadence... I'm really fond of the most recent live one, 'on tour... toronto/rochester.' That band just gets better and better, and even those who don't normally care for Duval might like him in this context. Also, McPhee's recent Bluette recordings (with reedman Joe Giardullo and bassists Michael Bisio and Duval) are highly recommendable... try 'In the Spirit' on CIMP. When I wrote about him for Jazziz last year, McPhee told me he didn't grow up in any kind of sanctified gospel tradition, but he takes to it quite naturally. If those three get you, you're probably hooked and might want to try the Atavistic reissue of 'Trinity,' an early album that McPhee views as the starting point of his mature voice. There's so much more, and if you gave me the chance, I'd try to sell you on all of them. But one more I'll mention because it's so unique is 'Sweet Freedom... Now What?' on hat Art (a label, incidentally, that was originally founded just to release McPhee records! And it was the *second* label founded for that reason, following the original recordings on CJR! How many artists have inspired two different people to start labels to record them?). It's a powerful reflection on Max Roach's 'Freedom Now' period by McPhee, pianist Paul Plimley and bassist Lisle Ellis, exquisitely recorded.
