Re: New Yor is Now! ... in Rome 4-6 April 2004!
Dear Efren, I think you are absolutely right...! I have not read the book (yet)... just controversial comments about it. I agree with you Tim Bern is, among others, an astonishing great musician! what I just wanted to underline... and share the joy with you is simply that Italy, compared to France for example, is far behind in proposing advanced creative Music to a larger audience, exactly as it was years ago with Coltrane or other "Giants" I hope this is a first of many joyful Steps! btw the author of the book is not going to perform at the Festival...;--) and this could be an invitation to people who are involved in studying and writing with competence a more open "what's going on"... who... where... from? ciao Stefania

well Efren, maybe you're right but... * it's just a title...;---))
The title should have read "William Parker's orbit is Now!" :-)
* reduction to the Parker-Shipp orbit... ??? if all the orbits were like these....;---)))
Of course, they're good musicians. What really bothers me is that the author of the book just focused on that small group of musicians and reduced the whole New York avant-jazz scene to it when there's so much interesting stuff going on. Not to mention that his comments on Zorn (reduced to one paragraph) are insulting and superfluous, not only because I feel irritated as a Zorn follower, but because you could tell from that paragraph that the author knew next to nothing about the man. If you ever read "New York Is Now" you'll quickly notice that he just mentions a dozen names that repeat themselves over and over again: Parker, Daniel Carter, David S. Ware, Charles Gayle, Guillermo E. Brown and not many more. As to more historic references, just three: Cecil Taylor, John Coltrane and Albert Ayler. He could at least mentioned Tim Berne! He's released some albums, for Christsake, and they're good!!
Best,
