Nuyorican Latin Soul days. Once a gang leader, legend says he had an epiphany while serving time in prison to learn to play the piano in order to keep himself out of trouble. He succeeded and built upon a style that merged elements of Black American Soul and Funk with a Latin beat. Better known as a singer, he later turned to disco as a source with less favourable results and picked up on early rap as an influence too. There are some superb compilations on the Harmless and Soul Jazz labels that cover these periods with some pretty juicy Bataan tracks. Haven't heard his collaboration with Ribot and the Postizos but it sure has the potential to be pure dynamite. Efren, put on your dancing shoes for this one.
