in the francis davis story, this line (written by davis -- not a quote) caused me pause -- it seems to fall exactly on the line separating profound and absurd: The composer and arranger Billy Strayhorn was a notable exception (to the apparently all straight jazz world of the time), but he was perfectly happy to spend his career in Duke Ellington's shadow, which was the same as being in the closet.
My favorite Francis Davis quote had to have been when he told me that Cannonball Adderley no longer yields any influence on young players and that David Murray was the most influential jazz player of the 1980s. skip h on 9/4/02 2:19 PM, mwisckol@ocregister.com at mwisckol@ocregister.com wrote:

David Murray was the most influential jazz player of the 1980s.
Surely it was Kenny Gorelick, no? <ducks> Later, Ben np: goblin, "suspiria" nr: samuel delany, "dhalgren" [Someone had asked about "Dhalgren" earlier, maybe s~z -- a Barthes reference? I'm at page 300-something right now, and it's proven to be a rather gripping read (the prose is fantastic), but I honestly can't tell you what it's about. All I can say is that something has happened (and it's not clear what that was), and that something is happening (and I'm not sure what it is either). Actually, I don't think the characters know either. It seems like a fairly straightforward narrative, except these odd moments are occurring more and more often. I can't go into detail about what these "odd moments" are -- I'd have to quote them to fully describe them, and that would be spoiling it -- but they essentially made me re-read the sentence, wondering if I got it right. Sometimes I'd read entire sections and wonder if I'd actually read them before, as if my bookmark was misplaced. But I'll follow Joseph Zitt's advice and try not to figure out the plot and just go along for the ride.] --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Depends who you ask. But I honestly don't think Murray was anywhere near the shortlist. skip h
[Someone had asked about "Dhalgren" earlier, maybe s~z -- a Barthes reference? ] s~Z is short for schwitterZ....bestowed upon me by friends in grad school and evoked by the Eno song, 'Kurt's (Schwitters) Rejoinder.' I'm reading Pale Fire now, but I think Dhalgren's up next. I like your description. Tim Berne got raves in the current Cadence. He *is* an amazingly consistent and growing artist.
Has it degenerated to the point that we must point out the mere mention of Mr. Zorn to keep this list some what about him? There's no value judgment there (as I'm probably more "off topic" than on), just an observation.
