Do we really need another string trio CD? There were many more interesting things that seemed to go on around the 50th. ----- Original Message ----- From: Peter Gannushkin <shkin@shkin.com> Date: Saturday, November 22, 2003 1:15 pm Subject: Re: Zorn's live recordings

New Masada String Trio appeared at Koch's web site. http://kochint.com/catalog/infopage.aspx?number=TZA-CD-5001
Not only it says "50th Birthday" (well, to be more precise "50TH BIRTHD" as all long names are truncated), but also the UPC number (TZA-CD-5001) looks like the beginning of the new series.

Hi there, Who do you ask? If you ask me, then no, we don't need it. In fact, I would say, we don't need any new Zorn's CDГ» unless it is something more interesting than gazillion filmworks and Masada projects. Except, probably, Electric Masada, which goes the direction of Zorn's improvs rather than another overproduced studio arrangements. -- Best regards, Peter Gannushkin URL: http://www.downtownmusic.net/ Saturday, November 22, 2003, you wrote to me: zbe> Do we really need another string trio CD? Hi, I agree with Peter here. Another Masada String Trio outing is definitely tiresome. In fact, the whole Masada thing is getting too overwhelming and seems a clear over-exploitation with the perspective of years of constant releases with the "line-up of the month". I haven't felt over-excited about a Zorn album since "IAO" but on the other hand, I think he still has a lot to offer. Even the Filmworks series are a good point of reference, although the latest two volumes aren't enough for me. "In the Mirror of Maya Deren" and "Three Documentaries" are among my favorite of the series, though. If you think about it, there are previous volumes like I or VI in which there were interesting things here and there, but they were certainly not as cohesive as his latest work. I wouldn't say his creativity is going down the hill. Maybe it's us who, after so many years, have lost the ability to get surprised or perhaps Zorn has really lost his more "out" side in favor of more widely-accepted genres. I don't know, he's still one of my top-composers by far and considering his constant investigation in any artistic fields, we should be expecting another turning point in his aesthetics in short. Let's be hopeful. Best, Efrén del Valle n.p: Anthony Braxton Quartet "Victoriaville (1992)" (Victo)- Reissue

Well, the first filmworks is an asolute classic for me, a refrence for zorn's works. From: Efrén del Valle <efrendv@yahoo.es>
