Electric Masada tomorrow night
Looking forward to seeing Electric Masada for the first time tomorrow night at Tonic. I notice that the line-up (John Zorn (alto sax), Marc Ribot (guitar), Cyro Baptista (percussion), Kenny Wollesen (drums), Jamie Saft (keyboard / synthesizer / lap-steel guitar) & Trevor Dunn (bass)) is almost the same as "The Gift" except for Wollenson instead of Baron. Is this the normal line-up for Electric Masada? Does "The Gift" sound anything like Electric Masada? I haven't yet heard either. I read a review of "The Gift" somewhere that said it was sweet, beautiful easy-on-the-ears music, like a "gift" to listeners for listening to his more difficult music. Any truth in that? I need to get some Zorn that my wife will be willing to listen to... besides Masada. I can only play Naked City's "nice" songs when she's around...... Paul

That does seem to be the usual line-up, give or take Medeski. The EM stuff is as congenial to non-Zorn listeners as THE GIFT, but is even better in some ways -- more stretch-out opportunities for Ribot, who SLAYS on this shit. sh
I checked out elect masada in victoriaville with the similar line up, plus medeski and perowsky instead of kenny. Elect masada has been described as the ultimate jam band before, I think there is some truth to that in the strict sense of the word [not in the genre term] Zorn does a lot of conducting in this group, pairing people off into twos threes etc, freeing up the music, creshendos, breaking it down... the masada tune becomes more of a launch pad for jams and conducted improv. Jamie saft really blows me away, hes gotten so much more choppy in the past few years, while still having one of the more defining tones for a keys player [another tonester being taborn] If you can catch medeski and saft playing together its a treat, their combined strenths really create something incredible. One last thing about the victo elect masada... Zorn was having a blast and grooving out, maybe its the new harido, maybe it was the 400+ or so people grooving out as well, but he was positively beaming. Something I hadnt really seen, it was a little scary actually... __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? SBC Yahoo! DSL - Now only $29.95 per month! http://sbc.yahoo.com

Hi, Electric Masada is scheduled for release on Tzadik in 2003. My guess is that will be a studio recording.
I need to get some Zorn that my wife will be willing to listen to... besides Masada.
The latest Zorn is really wife-friendly. "The Gift" is very smooth and relaxing, as the others said before, but you should definitely check his Filmworks series, specially the recent volumes. "Filmworks X: In the Mirror of Maya Deren" has also an exotica feel throughout with a line-up of cello, piano/keys and percussion. After a first listening I found it a bit repetitive and boring but I changed my mind shortly after and it became one of my favorites of the series. You could also check "Filmworks XIII: Invitation to a Suicide" in which Rob Burger, Wollesen and Ribot are superb. I don't think is among Zorn's best works but it's above the average, as usual.
