what do people think of the kayo dot release - the samples I've heard sound interesting, although they haven't really given me an idea of what the 'metal' aspects of this recording are? And for those who do like this release, how does it compare to maudlin of the well (to which I am also unitiated)? nathan Great recommendation on the stickmen by the way! Does anyone interested in gang of four also have an affinity for the Big Boys.

After repeated listenings, I like it more and more, but I'm not an obsessive metal fan or anything like that. The "metal" aspects don't really sound like "metal" as such, imho, or at least they sound like a very soft one. There are some aggressive guitar outbursts here and there, but I think the constant of the album are quiet, spacious pieces, very dramatic, quite post-rockish and, as I said, some guitar crescendos that could stand as the "metal-aliby". The instruments combination sounds great, the production is superb and I quite enjoy the vocals (but don't expect gutural growls!). In some way it's closer to a mixture of rock and chamber music. To put it another way, if I hadn't read anything about "metal" in the Tzadik info, I wouldn't have automatically related Kayo Dot to that style, in spite of the obscure references (mainly artwork). a while back I wrote a bit on this album. I like it too, it's grown on me. just like everything Efrén said, that's exactly correct! what I downloaded of maudlin of the well I like too, but they're definitely more 'metal' kinda like Opeth. but in all it's a good CD. -----Original Message----- From: zorn-list-bounces+andrewm=mail.selc.com.au@mailman.xmission.com [mailto:zorn-list-bounces+andrewm=mail.selc.com.au@mailman.xmission.com] On Behalf Of Efrén del Valle Sent: Wednesday, 21 January 2004 12:43 AM To: ericksna@umich.edu; zorn-list@mailman.xmission.com Subject: Re: kayo dot release/also maudlin of the well?
