Can you talk a bit more about this new direction that Kitano is taking? I'm hoping he leaves the violence behind. I think "Fireworks" is his best film, but in general I prefer the really sentimental ones without any cops or gangsters, e.g. "Scene by the Sea" & "Kikujiro." Ben

It seems that Kitano has taken a new direction in his new film, although blood and humor are still a constant. I was beginning to feel he's been making the same film over and over again and I have very high expectations with "Zatoichi". The European critics have really welcomed the film.

for best director for his new samurai movie "Zatoichi". Can't wait to see it.
Especially after having seen the film he shot before the latest: Dolls. Didn't have English subtitles, but was still magic and breathtaking...
One of the actors in "Zatoichi" also won the award for best new and upcoming actor for his role as a suicidal Japanese librarian in the Thai movie "Last Life in the Universe" (feat. Takeshi Miike as a yakuza).

Violence combined with humor will still be a constant in this film, but he's filmed an adapted script this time instead of an original story. It seems that the character he's performing is really popular in Japan (a blind samurai). There's blood and there's laughter and I hope it's some sort of balance between "Hana-bi" and "Kikujiro". I read in a good Swiss newspaper (NZZ) that indeed the film is very amusing, but that it is also a bloodfest.

I remember reading in an interview with him that he did "Kikujiro" to find out whether he could do anything that wasn't violent, but then realized that the violent stuff was what he was good at...
but in general I prefer the really sentimental ones without any cops or gangsters, e.g. "Scene by the Sea" & Haven't seen "Scenes..." What is that like?
