Re: Speaking of McCartney...
ah, patrice and skip, how glad i am that if nothing else the beatles will still fan the flames of passion. but i said not a word against sir macca. in fact, i'm a minority among my friends in defending his solo work. the fact that he worked with a genius does not make him a dish towel. nevertheless, i think that he might be bigger about it. he made the deal, and his name's on 'across the universe', 'lucy in the sky with diamonds', 'all my loving', 'rain', 'i am the walrus', 'strawberry fields forever', 'she said she said', 'i want you (she's so heavy)', even 'the ballad of john and yoko' for shit's sake. and just like i wish he could have found something deeper inside him than "what a drag" when he heard his former partner had been killed, i wish he'd be thankful enough for the brilliance of his career and associations to overlook not being happy with a deal he made. i understand his point, but i'd prefer better taste to prevail. _________________________________________________________________ Add photos to your messages with MSN 8. McCartney has no problem with Lennon having primary authorship on the Lennon songs. He just wishes that the Lennon estate would have the grace to allow him primary authorship on the songs that he wrote. As for the "What a drag" statement, imagine this scenario: You have just learned that your primary collaborator and best friend has been murdered. You receive a phone call from a journalist to inform you and get an instant reaction that is then splashed into worldwide headlines. What are the odds that the first words out of your mouth will be something profound? Glass houses, again. -- | jzitt@josephzitt.com http://www.josephzitt.com/ | | GPG: A4224EFA http://www.mp3.com/josephzitt/ | | == New book: Surprise Me with Beauty: the Music of Human Systems == | | Comma / Gray Code / VoiceWAVE Silence: the John Cage Discussion List |

Whoops, a word fell out: that should have been "erstwhile primary collaborator..." Best friend? I know that reading Yoko Ono's interviews these days you get an almost rosy picture of the relation between the two couples (Paul/Linda on one side, John/Yoko on the other), I even remember that just after the death of Linda, Yoko had the guts to claim that her and John were always longing the new Wings records and loved them (I almost peed in my pants when I read that -- I doubt that for John and Yoko there was music more despicable than Wings), but were really the wounds healed by the time John died? They were back talking to each other, but something was definitely broken. Anyway, this is an old story and even George is not with us anymore... Patrice. Well, there's this, from that Playboy interview from 1981 (http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Palms/6797/int3.html): John: Somebody asked me what I thought of Paul's last album and I made some remark like, I thought he was depressed and sad. But then I realized I hadn't listened to the whole damn thing. I heard one track -- the hit "Coming Up," which I thought was a good piece of work. Then I heard something else that sounded like he was depressed. But I don't follow their work. I don't follow Wings, you know. I don't give a shit what Wings is doing, or what George's new album is doing, or what Ringo is doing. I'm not interested, no more than I am in what Elton John or Bob Dylan is doing. It's not callousness, it's just that I'm too busy living my own life to be following what other people are doing, whether they're the Beatles or guys I went to college with or people I had intense relationships with before I met the Beatles.
