The first brick of the rumored upcoming Zorn Fest in occasion of Zorn´s 50th birthday might be scheduled: Dave Douglas announced on his website a Masada performance for September 18-20 at Tonic! Anyone has any further insights on this event? Thanks, Andreas, but actually the most exciting thing I discovered on Dave's website is that starting on March 25, he's going to celebrate his own 40th birthday (which actually falls on the 23rd) with a weeklong retrospective at New York's Jazz Standard. It begins with the Tiny Bell Trio and including virtually every band he's led, including the quartet with Mengelberg and Bennink, Witness, the El Trilogy bands, the Sextet, the New Quintet, and the even newer Septet, about which more below. (The only bands missing, as far as I can see, are the quartet with Bill Carrothers--a one-off, perhaps--the quartet with Ben Perowsky, and the cute little Indo-jazz trio with Myra Melford and Samir Chatterjee.) Here's the schedule, as posted on davedouglas dot com. March 25: Early: Tiny Bell Trio Late: Four in One w/ Misha Mengelberg, Brad Jones and Han Bennink March 26: Early: Parallel Worlds and Witness Late: Alloy w/ Roy Campbell & Baikida Carroll March 27: Early: Charms of the Night Sky Late: El Trilogy March 28: Dave Douglas Sextet March 29: Dave Douglas New Quintet March 30: Dave Douglas Septet That last band, by the way, is a more-or-less new group that spun out of the touring Witness ensemble: Chris Speed, Joey Baron, Jamie Saft, Craig Taborn, Ikue Mori and Brad Jones. They've got a new album, 'Freak In,' due out from (presumably) RCA on February 18, and the band hits the road for tours of the east and west coasts and Europe the following day. Check out the website for the tour dates. Steve Smith ssmith36@sprynet.com
