Painkiller's "Talisman" was badly critizised in most magazines and I particularly remember The Wire referring to it as a showcase of the worst aspects of the band, which seems ridiculous to me. Everything seems more focused than on, say, "Execution Ground". The improvisations are far more cohesioned and structured, there's a great balance between the improvisational, rock and dubbish passages, and a superb playing by Zorn, Harris and Laswell. In addition to that, it seems to me one of their most dynamic releases, despite the accusations that "nothing happened" in that concert. I was just listening this weekend to Painkiller's "Talisman" & have to say I think this album shows Zorn's BEST sax playing!! Yeah, we know he does all these honks & squeals & squeaks, which is "yeah, yeah" after a bit, but on this CD he does some stuff I can't recall him doing before, like in Masada, NC, or other stuff. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy all his playing in the projects I mention earlier... I just think this CD is a standout for him. I'm mainly talking about his really fast bebop-esque stuff on here. lines, I haven't heard him do much/before... he does some serious 'shredding' :) he also does this very high pitched continuous squeal with these rhythmical honks - it's really cool. anyway, just thought I'd share that...
