Hi, This is great news! Imho Berne is one of those rare musicians who are still true to their spirit, totally uncompromising and with an enviably cohesive output. By the way, if someone feels like getting some Berne material, there's a fantastic BLOODCOUNT PACK at the Screwgun site. The Unwound 3-cd boxset plus two more albums for a ridulous USD40. That's music not to be missed! Oh, and I'm in no way related to Berne, really :-) Best, Efrén del Valle n.p: V.V.A.A. Holy smokes! I wish i didn't already have all the bloodcount just so I could buy the 'pack', and feel smug knowing that I got great music at a great price. Efren didn't mention that the other 2 dsics in the pack are 'Discretion' and 'Saturation Point'. I'm particularly fond of the latter Honestly, it's a shame (assuming that he's still selling the first pressing) that Tim even has thesee bloodcount discs still for sale - the music is so good, he should have been sold out YEARS ago. I remember that I had almost given up on jazz music, but then I heard bloodcount, and the rest was history... As a big Berne fan, I see your point. However, while bloodcount is rewarding, it is not easy to get ionto the music: one has to listen to long tunes, and the best moments of the discs usually come after some 15+ minutes. It's only after I took bloodcount to a potrable cd player for a walk that I got blown away by the band. Marcin ----- Original Message ----- From: "William W. Hi Marcin and everyone else, I completely agree - you have to take the time to listen and hear a tune develop. If you pay attention, you can hear the main groove of a song (which only becomes obvious after 7-15 minutes) from the very beginning, but it takes concentration (and perhaps more than one listen). It's as if they have a funky groove in mind, but spend 10 minutes 'abstracting' it until it bursts through. What is really amazing about that band is that each member is so damn good at it - they work together so well. My own 'blown away' experience happened at a live show in 1997. I had never heard them (or anythign by berne) before, but the zorn list was buzzing with talk about how great bloodcount was, so when i saw an announcement in the local paper, i went (and dragged 5 or 6 friends along). There were maybe 15 people there, and Berne began the festivites by telling everyone, in no uncertain terms, to be quiet. With no other announcements, the music started, and we were all afraid to make any noise at all. As the music progressed, intimidation turned into awe. After the last note of the second set had died out, we were all dumbstruck and basically overwhelmed by what we had seen and heard, so there was general silence and some tentative whispering amongst audience members. The musicians started to break down their equipment, and finally Berne says, 'It's o.k. to talk now.' Rarely have I witnessed a group of musicians have such a profound impact on an audience. Hi, I think there was a big leap between the Paris Concert recordings for JMT and the later releases on Screwgun, which are much more dynamic imho. In fact, I never liked the Paris sessions very much and it was definitely a bad introduction to Berne's music in my case. I never listened to him again until I saw Bloodcount live in conditions similar to those William encountered in terms of attendance. This time it was a hotel hall in the Ramblas of Barcelona, an absolutely weird place for a concert of any sort. That's where the whole thing blew up for me. It was a great show, one of the best I've ever been to. I think "The Shell Game" requires even higher levels of attention, as does "Open, Coma". One of the best things for me in Berne's music is that you never know how things will develop. It's not about theme-solo rounds-theme. In fact, there aren't too many solos and the leading role is extremely diffused, sort of an Ornettian approach, particularly in Bloodcount's case. I was blown away at the same time, maybe even the same tour... maybe even the same venue, it was the knitting factory old office in nyc. And it was because of hyping on the zornlist. I was really intimidated by him, the music, everything. I was taking some covert pictures and afterwards [buying discretion] he kind of chewed me out for not asking permission. In reality I thought he was the lighting technician [was fiddling with the lights for a while before the show] It was my first time hearing jim and chris as well. The thing that drew me in was in all the free & out of bloodcount there was always this implied groove, this funkiness. The next few weeks I would listen to bloodcount:discretion on the discman while riding my bike around lower nyc and brooklyn. Nothing made me ride faster. jt

i actually recorded the ann arbor disc of unwound, and there were probably about 20 people there maximum. it was still a pretty amazing show, and my first time seeing any of those players. needless to say, the shows here since then have been much better attended. sean I was blown away at the same time, maybe even the same tour... maybe even the same venue, it was the knitting factory old office in nyc. I'm as much a Berne fan as the next guy, but, for bike riding, try Slayer's 'South of Heaven'. Fantomas's "Director's cut" is also a great bike soundtrack. Berne's bloodcount is the best %jazz% thing for bike. The rhythmic awesomeness gives the energy required. mg

This is surprising. When I interviwed him two years ago one of the first things I wanted to ask him was his thoughts about piracy, considering how much care is put in every single Screwgun release and he just didn't seem to care at all. I think I was just overly sensitive about it, after he assaulted my ears during the set it was just unbelievable the volume of sound that was moved around that room, I took passing comment too much to heart. jt

In Berne's own terms: "ItÂs a complicated question. IÂm not sure if piracy is any worse than what happens legally when you make a record for somebody, because you end up being ripped-off anyway. To see the record labels complaining about piracy is pretty funny. I havenÂt dealt with any but IÂve really been particularly honest in terms of the accounting, but if they just wanna control it, like all this stuff about Napster and all that shit, IÂd love to see how these major labels are actually paying royalties. IÂm sure theyÂre stealing money. And in terms of cd-rÂs, I like to think that the way I present the cds, hopefully people are gonna want the package. ItÂs not just a piece of plastic with the cd on it. ThereÂs something a little bit more to it. In fact, IÂm trying to make things interesting enough so people are not gonna want bootlegs. But again, the machines that do this stuff were kind of created by these corporations (laughs). ItÂs kind of humorous in a way. I guess the big rock starts are complaining but me I donÂt give a shit. In most of the gigs, people are bringing these little portable minidisc players. ThereÂs like five people recording it every night and they end up on these trading lists."
