I always took for granted that the "Smile" album was given up by Brian Wilson after months of work and that some of those tracks were re-recorded and included in "Smiley Smile".
Correct.
I have read, though, that a "Smile Sessions" box set was released in the late eighties or early nineties. I've never seen that box set in the stores here, nor have I heard about someone owning it in my area.
There is a 'Pet Sounds' box, with lots of outtakes from the 'Pet Sounds' album, plus there is another box celebrating 30 years (I think) of Beach Boys music. That's the box that contains some 'Smile' material.
However, a month ago I found a vinyl copy of "Smile"
'Smile' has been extensively bootlegged. I own at least 4 different versions of it. The album you found is obviously a boot. I'm not sure, but I wouldn't be surprised if a bootleg 'Smile' box exists. I just read on a website that the "Smile" box set does exist but it's actually a bootleg although it's not listed in the typical online stores. Thanks. Maybe that is the website that you saw, but there is a very detailed article on the topic of "Smile" that was published recently on http://www.stylusmagazine.com/. Unfortunately I just gave it a look and I don't know where it is on their current site, but you can google for it: http://216.239.57.104/ search?q=cache:QyH2V7cj578J:www.stylusmagazine.com/ +stylus+magazine+smile&hl=en&ie=UTF-8 (Stupid Mail.app might mangle the URL, it is just one line). It seems to still be accessible. Julien

Thanks for the hint, Julien! "Stylus" did a redesign of its site and was offline for few days. These are the new links for the "Smile" article by Ed Howard: http://www.stylusmagazine.com/feature.php?ID=59 http://www.stylusmagazine.com/feature.php?ID=60 Regards Franz Fuchs
Ed howard is on the money, although I doubt that Dominic Priore would think so, but Dominic can often has these intense labywrinth theories that don't seem at all practical to me. I have a bunch of the SMILE bootleg stuff, and I think the obvious answer to the whole thing is that Brian Wilson built a mountain he couldn't climb and he eventually knew it, but, since the stakes were so high, he kept recording stuff that he thought would tie together all these elements and finally got to a point where the record had mutated into something he could never shape together, and at the same time, he couldn't deal with the professional/family pressures that would have broken anyone his age with his responsibility. skip h http://www.skipheller.com NP: Bob Dylan, TIME OUT OF MIND
