Hello all, Here is another late list of 2002's best. I'm a super procrastinater but at least I made one. 1. Atomic- Feet Music (Jazzland) Very energetic and creative Swedish jazz band with very memorable tunes. 2. 7 Pieces- Christer Bothen Acoustic Ensemble (LJCD) Quirky intricate stop and start playing, where everything is perfectly in place. 3. Are You Be- R.U.B. (Animul) Rothenberg, Uchihashi, Bennett Well thought out pieces that really stand out 4. Science Friction- Tim Berne (Heavy duty Berne freak and this one is right up there) 5. Tyft- Hilmar Jensson (Songlines) w/ Jim Black and Andrew D'angelo, sounds like the best of Human Feel 6. Gueuleloup- Achim Kaufman 4tet (RedToucan) Second outing of this band w/ Michael Moore. Really gorgeous melodies and playing. 7. 23 Constellations of Joan Miro- Bobby Previte (Tzadik) On a lotta people's list for good reason. I like playing this on the computer so I can see the breaks and song titles which makes it easy to match them up with the paintings and personnel. 8. 30 Micro Stems- Jorrit Dykstra (Trytone) Fast becoming one of my favorite musicians. Its amazing the layers of sound he gets with 1 sax and some processing 9. Scorch Trio- Bjorkenheim, Haker Flaten, Love Aptly named band. They really tear it up and never run out of ideas. 10. In Our Times- School Days (Okka) Couldn't have a years best list without a Vandermark title. Better than the 1st School Days which is saying a lot. Very powerful. I enjoyed everyone else's list so much I had to contribute this year. Cheers, John Threadgould
