Fans of his will definitely love the book. I think Dead Man is very easily his best film and also one of the best films of the 90s. I especially love the awkward violence, the black & white photography, and the critical take on American culture and its obsession with death. Not to mention a soundtrack that rivals Paris, Texas in its beauty... And I'm all for Benigni.

variety of opinions on Jarmusch films. I think Stranger than paradise is without a doubt his best film. The rest of his films are only... good. But that's only my opinion.
About Benigni question: Yes, he's not an actor, and his presence on any film is quite disgusting. Regards. Ricardo.

Now Im reading interviews with Jim Jarmusch and an autobio on akira kurosawa
I just watched Down By Law last night. I thoroughly enjoyed it, but I don't know why. The humor was mostly inexplicably funny; no one who watched it with me could figure out why it was so funny. There weren't any jokes per se, save the butchering of clichés. I did enjoy Lurie's score performed by the Lounge Lizards (Ribot and Lindsay were both present, though Ribot did not play guitar...)
Is Roberto Benigni unable to play any one other than himself? It seems that every movie he is in he is the same character and he always falls in love or is in love with his real wife. Would it be fair to call him an actor?

Hi,
i love 'dead man' in part b/c it is so different from many of his other films, some of which i'm not a fan of. ('night on earth' and 'ghost dog' were, for me, unwatchable).
"Night on Earth" may seem more of a cliché in comparison to "Dead Man", for instance, but "Mistery Train" would easily fit into the same category. I really think that the criss-crossing of stories à la "Pulp Fiction" (just to mention a popular example) or those stories seen from different personal angles have become a bit stereotyped. However, imho, Jarmusch succeeds when using those tools, which move most of his movies. "Ghost Dog" unwatchable? Well, it may not be his best film, but for me it's still a wonderful picture.
i know a lot of folks who loved 'dead man' but hated the soundtrack; but then, a lot of people hate neil young.
I'm not particularly fond of Neil Young, but the "DM" soundtrack is just amazing. These things happen! Best, Efrén del Valle n.p: Martin Denny "The Exotic Sounds of Martin Denny" (Capitol)
