That's how according Great Jewish Music: Sasha Argov CD was conceived, according to what Danny Zamir Told a music editor in the Voice of Music radio station here in Jerusalem. After Zamir's Satlah band covered on their 2nd CD, 'Exodus', a Hebrew song by M.Nardi, and dedicated their 3rd CD, 'Children of Israel', to Hebrew songs from the 1920-1940, Zamir's mother, who is a music teacher in Tel-Aviv, suggested that he'll record songs of Sash Argov. Zamir 'marketed' the idea to Zorn and you know the rest. It is ironic that Zamir and some of the artists on the Sasha Argov CD are trying to 'relocate' Israeli composers into the Klezmer tradition, while these composers cam to Israel from Eastern Europe, where the Klezmer music was popular, and tried to create new Israeli and Hebrew songs that will reflect the new Israeli experience and mot the Old World of Diaspora. Zamir, in fact, is neglecting their musical will and forces them back to a musical world which they abandoned. And one last thing about the GJM series. I never liked this term. Did Bacharach or Bolan think of them selves as Jewish Composers? Is there something Jewish in their music? It's seems more as a marketing trick. Beside, i still remember that Zorn/Tzadik wanted to include in that series a tribute to Dave Brubeck, and in the last minute found out that Brubeck is not Jewish, and released that CD on AVANT. Hi,
But some of the arrangements are quite nice, especially the one of Erik Friedlander, Elysian Fields,Uri Caine/Ben Perowsky and Mark Feldman.
I'd say that these artists Eyal mentioned are actually the only interesting in the whole album. The Bolan tribute wasn't that good for me and this one just left me cold and didn't make me want to know Argov's music at all, which seems to be one of the purposes of the GJM series. I've been lowering my expectations with Zorn lately, specially after this and Masada Guitars.
All the best,
Efrén del Valle n.p: Tim Sparks "Neshamah" (Tzadik)
