This has been a really interesting discussion in that, ever since, say the mid-'80's, I don't think that anyone would disagree that Prince has been erratic. Yet in retrospect, there's great material from pretty much all his releases. And I don't think anyone has mentioned Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic yet - a really decent album including a stunning song called Wherever U Go, Whatever U Do, with Prince in full Al Green mode, and just aching to be covered by somebody - Justin Guarini....you can still salvage a career if you'd apply yourself! Dale.
Of course, that's also the album where Prince covers Sheryl Crow's "Every Day Is a Winding Road"... still, you're right, it hardly wrecks the whole disc. Do I understand correctly that the Prince albums (as opposed to the O)+> albums) during much of that period were pretty much studio scraps put out without much of his involvement? I had thought so at the time, but having listened to "Come" again a few weeks ago and loved it, and seeing the discussion here, I wonder if that's so, since that was pretty coherent and strong for a throwaway. -- | jzitt@josephzitt.com http://www.josephzitt.com/ | | GPG: A4224EFA http://www.mp3.com/josephzitt/ | | == New book: Surprise Me with Beauty: the Music of Human Systems == | | Comma / Gray Code / VoiceWAVE Silence: the John Cage Discussion List |
