Hello folks The following came over the seldom-active wayne horvitz email list, and I figured I would pass it along as there may be some horvitz fans here. (I notice also that the label Horvitz mentions has a live recording of Vinicius Cantuaria that looks interesting....) -whit ---------- Forwarded message ---------- Date: Wed, 03 Mar 2004 17:39:48 -0800 From: waynehorvitz.com <contact@waynehorvitz.com> To: Whit Schonbein <wwschonb@artsci.wustl.edu> Subject: Zony Mash Live 2003 CD Hello everyone, I dont usually write these announcements personally but I wanted to make sure you know about the recently released Zony Mash Live CD, recorded last December at our two final shows. Like just about everything with Zony Mash from the early days on, this recording happened virtually by accident. Brady Lahr, who runs Kufula records, called me from LA and asked me if he could record a concert last fall at the Skirball Center. It was a double bill of Sweeter Than The Day and Robin Holcomb. I declined, mostly because I want to do a Sweeter Than the Day Live record over a few evenings in the near future. I did mention though that I would be thrilled if he would come up to Seattle and record the final two nights of Zony Mash. I had been thinking of doing this anyway but I had given up on the idea due to all the logistical considerations. Im now happy to say that the end result is in my opinion the best record the band ever made, and a great finish to an eight-year long project. Mell Detmer, who has been doing our live sound for years and is also a great recording engineer recorded and mixed the shows. I should clarify that the mixes are essentially glorified rough mixes. We had over five hours of music, and even after whittling it down to 160 minutes we werent about to detail every little moment. Mell got great sounds and mixed it with a real live feel that Im very happy with. No mistakes are fixed. Its really warts and all. Although there are takes from both nights, the vast majority of the music comes from the second night, and a lot of the transitions and set order are exactly as they happened at the shows. Besides great versions of classic Zony Mash tunes there are three new tunes that have never appeared on CD Also included are electric versions of Sweeter Than the Day repertoire and a great take of Tim Youngs Diggin Bones. This song has also never appeared on a Zony Mash CD. Two years ago we recorded Live in Seattle for the Liquid City label. In six nights of recording I worked hard to find 60 minutes I was really happy with. In this recording though I had a very difficult time whittling it down to just 160 minutes. The Kufala set is two CDs, each with 80 minutes. Even at that I had to toss at least four tunes that would have otherwise made the grade. Kufula is a live only label that only sells its product on order via the internet and at live shows. You can visit our page at their website at http://www.kufala.com/artist/show.php?catnum=58 Ive also written some liner notes that go along with this set. You can see them in the Speech section at www.waynehorvitz.com. WH
