I do all my cd buying online, Ive agreed to 50$ a month on music, its not nearly enough. Theres nothing like getting discs in the mail, the anticipation, the opening [tearing off that damn ultra sticky tape along the top] taking in the album art and sounds, driving anywhere and cranking it.
hi jason maybe it's a thiung for drivers but for me the joy is being in a small store, a place that attracts people i can talk to about music, where i can get suggestions or where they get to know my taste. it becomes a social outlet; a musical equivalent of the old barbershop. for me this place is downtown music gallery, for jazzfreeimprov whatever stuff, and a few other places for rock/rnb bootlegs. although for ambient and noise, the web-only manifoldrecords.com is amazing in that the owner, vince, gets to know the customers tastes and makes suggestions. steve koenig n.p. or about to be: robert rich. open window. soundscape007.

I totally agree, when I lived in nyc I would hit DMG every week. I relocated to northern newhampshire 3 years ago, the nearest borders [or anything that looks like a mall] is over an hour away, the local independent bookstore is overpriced and weak on the music selection. There are advantages and disadvantages to rural living... Anyone else living rurally on the list? When Im back in nyc I soak it all back up, kosars bialis, tonic, DMG, Other Music, Chelsea galleries, graphitti, friends & dive bars, korean supermarkets, sushi etc etc etc... Almost time for another run down. jt

Yeah, northeast Mississippi. It's a good thing I don't have any culchah nearby, because I can't afford it anyway.

Stop it, you're killing me. Wm. Crump
I might as well be living rurally: I live in Phoenix. Great for rock and blues (and country of course, which is not my thing except for Patsy Cline and Bob Wills, et al), not so great for anything else. There used to be a good Tower next to the university; there'd always be one guy there who loved Zorn or other outside stuff. I loved being able to go in there, hang out and talk, discover something new. Between the (apparent) lack of places to buy here, and my lack of time, I mostly buy online. When I'm in the Bay Area I go to Amoeba. My first record: Elmer Bernstein's soundtrack for "To Kill a Mockingbird". kelley On Jul 12, 2004, at 7:29 AM, Jason Tors wrote:
