Rootless Cosmopolitans, James Blood Ulmer, Odean Pope
hello everybody talking about Rootless Cosmopolitans, i must say their first album never gave me (almost) any thrill. it's a good record, and i like to listen to it now and then, but at the time i had already listened to "requiem-for-what's-his-name" and my expectations were high. the fact is i can't remember any tune of that album, apart from "the wind cries mary" and "mood indigo" (please note, two covers). I think "requiem" on the other hand is an amazing album. the title track is wonderful, as is "lamonte's nightmare", "yo i killed your god" "first time every time" and of course the covers of "caravan" and "commit a crime".. well all the album is great, good construction and ideas, and top playing by all the musicians. still a favourite. and i think the first real success for Marc Ribot as a band leader(!). James Blood Ulmer is a guitarist i respect a lot and i always liked his "concept", but i must admit the only disc i kept was "tales of captain black". it blew me away the first time i heard it and still does.. And last but not least, Skip, you mentioned the Odean Pope Trio album on Moers?? That WAS amazing.. It's one of my all time favourites, the energy level and technical fireworks are simply breathtaking. do you have any recommendations of other Pope records? they seem difficult to find.. bye nic ______________________________________________________________________ Yahoo! Hi, I'm going to spend the next four weeks in Saarbrucken, Germany. Does anyone knows if there's any musical life there: clubs, secondhand record stores, etc? Thanks, Marcin
