Assuming you're in the US the best place to start is the most obvious: the Copyright Office (http://www.loc.gov/copyright/). There are plenty of basic manuals and introductions plus all of the relevant statutes and rulings. Another good piece is on copyright myths at http://www.templetons.com/brad/copymyths.html.
