i think i know what the original poster meant about larger mingus units -- as composer, he had an incredible palette. but some of his most stunning work was done by smaller units -- which also let his energy come thru even more nakedly. i saw his group with george adams, jack walrath and don pullen twice and both shows remain highlights of my live listening experience. martin np. steve lacy, the forest and the zoo
