I have to add to my 2003 top 10 (which it now appears I posted prematurely) the new Unearthed Box by the late Johnny Cash on American Recordings. It's a 5 CD + book + box set. From 1994 to 2003, Cash recorded many songs for Rick Rubin's American Recordings label. (Something like 100 songs were recorded for the first album, of which a dozen or so actually made it to the album.) Four albums were released and it appears a fifth is forthcoming. This box set contains 4 cds (64 songs) of previously unreleased recordings from this time period, deemed for whatever reason or another not appropriate for a straight-out release but okay for a boxed-set. A few of the songs are alternate takes but the vast majority are new songs. 1 of these 4 discs is all gospel songs. The use of gospel here means simply "religiously themed" songs, as opposed to a particular style of music. This disc is strictly solo Cash, guitar and vocals, no backing musicians, and no delightfully toe-tappingly catchy Nine-Inch-Nails covers. On this single disc alone (which is all I have listened to at this point) this release makes the top 10 list. By the way, the fifth disc in this box is a compilation of selected songs from the previous four albums on American Recordings. David K. p.s. All the early Cash records on American Recordings were available on vinyl or cd. It appears that this box set is only available on cd.
