In addition to the live box (which is great if your budget stretches that far -- and a damn site more consistent than the spotty Marsalis box), I'd recommend 'Haywire,' Thomas's disc with strings. Great tunes and smart arrangements. I'll also take the opportunity to preach one more time the merits of Mario Pavone's wonderful 'Dancers Tales' (also on Knitting Factory Records), which boasts the enviable front line of Chapin and Marty Ehrlich. Music aside, Thomas was a beautiful, sweet, sensitive soul. His untimely passing came during my stint at the Knitting Factory, and needless to say, we were all completely shellshocked at the enormity of the loss. We still are. Hello Steve, The box set has all 7 CDs of Chapin's Knitting Factory period. "Haywire" is among them. My first and favorite is "Menagerie Dreams" with Zorn on couple of tracks. It was the key album for me, as the introduction to New York downtown jazz scene started with it. "Sky Piece" - Thomas's last studio recording - is also very beautiful. Other treasure from is "Radius" - early album recorded in 1984 and published by MuWorks. It has liner notes by Bruce Lee Galanter from Downtown Music Gallery, which is also, I think, the only place you can find it now. Speaking about collaboration with Pavone, I would highly recommend album "Seven Standards" on Knitting Factory released as Anthony Braxton/Mario Pavone quintet with Thomas Chapin, Dave Douglas and Pheeroan Ak Laff. -- Best regards, Peter Gannushkin URL: http://www.downtownmusic.net/ Wednesday, April 2, 2003, you wrote: ssc> In addition to the live box (which is great if your budget stretches that ssc> far ssc> -- and a damn site more consistent than the spotty Marsalis box), I'd ssc> recommend 'Haywire,' Thomas's disc with strings.
