hello all. here's a good'n'geeky game. i got an ipod for christmas, and with the stupidly huge memory decided i should pick some permanent selections for the device. the idea isn't to select the best records, or my favorites, or even to be representative, but just to select the things that will regularly make me happy walking the streets of manhattan (for example, erstwhile discs would make little sense since street noise would overpower them). i worked it to a list of 2 dozen just because that's how many lines were on the sheet of paper i was using. the beatles - rubber soul hoahio - ohayo! hoahio! optical*8 - bug otomo yoshihide - we insist! brian eno - another green world the rolling stones - some girls the clash - london calling sleepytime gorilla museum - grand opening and closing the slits - cut elvis costello - this year's model ornette coleman - dancing in your head prince - lovesexy stevie wonder - talking book guns'n'roses - appetite for destruction in order to survive - the peach orchard parliament - motor booty affair the residents - duck stab/buster & glen naked city - naked city pink floyd - relics henry threadgill - too much sugar for a dime the art ensemble of chicago - third decade johnny cash - live at fulsom prison charles mingus - mingus presents mingus sonic youth - evol as i type this, i realize i need to make room for cornelius. so, what are some other outdoor headphone picks? happy new year, y'all - kurt _________________________________________________________________ Worried about inbox overload? I would add the-three-greatest-artists-to-come-out-of-Memphis-because-I'm-not-an- Elvis-fan: Al Green ā any good compilation, but I have "The Supreme Al Green," 1992, Demon Big Star ā #1 Record/Radio City (for some reason I have the German edition on Line) Compulsive Gamblers ā Gambling Days Are Over (Sympathy for the Record Industry, long out of print) Wm. Fantomas, the director's cut Slayer, South of Heaven Jeff Beck, You had it coming King Crimson the power to believe davis, agharta (esp. disc 1) Living Colour Times's up Note: I used a CD/MP3 player for bike trips, so more energetic sounds were, as you see, in demand. The Fantomas was the real hit. On a related topic: my device (a Samsung) was making a short (0.5 seconds) breaks between mo3 tunes. That was driving me mad, and was one of the reasons why I enentually sold the thing. was really surprised that all mp3cds I tried had the same drawback. Is it the same with iPod and other devices, is it somehow necessary (I can't believe it being so) Marcin (who still hopes to be able to use a good portable sound source)

Is it the same with iPod and other devices, is it somehow necessary (I can't believe it being so) Unlike a CD, which deals with a continuous stream of bits, MP3 players load up one file at a time, so unless a clever engineer somewhere decides that it's okay to buffer the beginning of one item while playing back the end of another, you're stuck with that delay. (There are plug-ins for some software that will do essentially this, and iTunes tries to work around the problem with a lame cross-fading feature that doesn't work especially well, but I guess that's a start.) The other alternative is to burn files as collections of tracks that blend together, but that takes a lot more work than just slamming a CD into the drive and telling iTunes to go to work.
Other essentials for walking trips, though, would be some Patti Smith ("Wave" would be my choice, album-wise, though you'd get its highlights and more by dumping all of "Land" on to the 'Pod instead), The The ("45 RPM" for random play, "Dusk" if you're going album by album), and the New Pornographers' "Mass Romantic" for some sunny-afternoon cheer. Oh, and a Ramones concert album. -me
This isn't that much work. You highlight the songs in iTunes that stay together and then click on Advanced/Join CD Tracks before you import. I learned this when dealing with Abbey Road, which is another great candidate for walking around. On Jan 6, 2004, at 6:18 AM, Taylor McLaren wrote:

Kurt, funny you should bring up the iPod. I bought one last summer and it has changes the way I listen to music. I use it mainly in the car and now at home I plug it into a speaker system. But I currently have loaded on it about 125 lps on it (about 3100 songs) and 95% of the time I play strictly "Random" It is awesome! It's also great to have so much material right at my finger tips - it's making fumbling around w/ cds rather primal. Everything I buy now goes right on the iPod - usually before I listen to it. IĀm waiting for something that can handle 2000 discs and that will be my main source of listening entertainment! z --- Kurt Gottschalk <ecstasymule@hotmail.com> wrote:
