This may have been discussed at some time on the list. After years of searching I have finally found a copy of the live Cecil Taylor video "Burning Poles". I seem to remember a remark, made here, along the lines that for those struggling to understand his music you really have to see Cecil Taylor live. For many of us particularly in Europe this is becoming increasingly difficult. I warmly recommend "Burning Poles" as a way of getting some idea of a Taylor performance. Its not the torrid assault of vintage Taylor and it is cut into bite size pieces but you do get a very good look at the man in action. He is accompanied by the Feel Trio with an extra percussionist. Its split into 3 sections, the first is a recital/performance/dance with bass and percussion which lasts about 10 minutes, then comes the main body of the piece a 30 minute piano performance that builds in a similar way to the "2Ts . . ." pieces, finally there is a short piano piece with a brief spoken performance in the middle. The whole thing is shot by 4 cameras in a studio with atmospheric lighting. The CT fans may feel this is not representative of an unleashed performance but I found it a fascinating and detailed look at a true genius at work. Five stars. Richard Gardner
