Interestingly, a lot of people who have listened to my Masada recordings seem to think that Zorn has a limited musical vocabulary, using very similar types of licks and effects. I would argue that ultimately this does not matter. His solos still generate excitement and interest (the Masada live albums are testament to that). As for his playing being not on par with the other members of the group, I would say that Masada is hinged on the astounding interaction between the players, not individual virtuosity. Saying that JZ's playing is hardly comparable with DD's and THE weak point of masada quartet seems strange to me. Marcin G
How is it questionable? Hearing somebody say that they're sick of ironic gestures and praising the emotional directness of the guy's current work sounds like a solid compliment to me.
