Hi guys, Am wondering when that annual thread of recent fave litritchure will again raise its head. As I myself have been to horribly behind in my own reading habits I am not in any position to kick this one off. But to give it a gentle nudge, can anyone on the list recommend a good English translation of Don Quixote by Cervantes? Much Obliged to One and All. +++ As a Zorn related aside... Anthony Pateras is performing in a trio (pAteras/Baxter/Brown)25th July Bennetts LAne in Melbourne.9pm start. 2 sets to promote their cd Ataxia on Synrecords and fund European tour in October!! __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? There are so many... There's a brand new translation, only a few months old, by Edith Grossman. It has been very well received. For the uninitiated, a recent translation would be preferable to an ostensibly more staid, older translation. For an undertaking such as Quixote, you need all the help you can find. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0060188707/qid=1090587699/sr=8 -2/ref=pd_ka_2/002-0042621-3624858?v=glance&s=books&n=507846 For a more established translation, try Cohen's. -----Original Message----- From: zorn-list-bounces+zsteiner=butler.edu@mailman.xmission.com [mailto:zorn-list-bounces+zsteiner=butler.edu@mailman.xmission.com] On Behalf Of aaron chua Sent: Friday, July 23, 2004 7:45 AM To: zorn list Subject: Summer/Winter Reading - Quixote? Hi Aaron, One of the few English translations of Don Quixote that I've checked is Edith Grossman's and I found she tackled it with a high level of professionality, updating the language in a respectful manner without falling onto ridiculous verbatim reproductions. The Grossman choice doesn't seem a casual choice. However, an English native speaker is more likely to give you a realistic point of view on this matter. In any event, I would suggest you to stay from translations by reknowned authors, speaking in general terms, that is. Being excellent writers doesn't necessarily mean they are good translators. A good example of this is Cortázar's Spanish translations of Poe's fantastic tales, which are somehow retrograde, hard-to-read versions of excellent originals, not to mention his abussive use of footnotes, which make the reading quite unconfortable (I say this inspite his being one of my favorite writers ever!) There are several other examples that support this suggestion, like Borges' Spanish translation of Kafka's Metamorphosis. It's unreadable and totally outdated. Who knows, maybe it's professional envy, I don't know! Best, Efrén del Valle n.p: SC3 "Book of Truth" --- aaron chua <aaronchua22@yahoo.com> escribió: > Hi guys,

My summer favorite, hands down: 'Parting the Waters: America in the King Years, 1954-63', by Taylor Branch My previous favorite non-fiction history book of all time was probably 'The Making of the Atomic Bomb' by Richard Rhodes, or Stephen Ambrose's D-Day book, or maybe McCulloch's biography of Truman, but 'Parting the Waters' really made me think. I'm still thinking. Am I the only one on the list who prefers history to fiction as entertainment reading? -whit nr - 'Gotham' (a history of NYC) On Fri, 23 Jul 2004, aaron chua wrote:
