I´ve attended this gig and it was a quartet called Skins & Strings with Vandermark as a special guest at the end of the performance. It wasn´t a noise fest but one of the best performances of last year. I´ll be in doubt if this can make it on a CD. Another recommendation: Hamid Drake - Michael Zerang Duo / Ask The Sun (Okka) My first concert with Hamid (Hank Drake at the time) was at the Moers festival 1979 with Fred Anderson (one of the best concerts ever!) I remember reading in The Wire some time ago about a new live recording with Drake, Ken Vandermark, Han Bennink and two guys from The Ex. I think it was recorded at the Wels festival. Did anybody go to that show? I'm curious if this is one disc I should be picking up. All the musicians are great, but improvised stuff can get pretty crowded with as many as five people, perhaps especially these five! Was it just a noise fest??

Hi,
np: Albert Ayler - Music Is The Healing Force (Impulse)
What does this sound like? I absolutely love all the stuff I've heard from Ayler but I'm not sure with this one. There are vocals indicated in the back of the Cd and I'm afraid it could be in the same soul/R&B-infected vein as "New Grass", from which I've only read negative things (although you never know, of course). I don't mind if it sounds like soul or R&B at all, what's more, I'd really like to hear AA in such an environment, that rough playing over a groovy rythm section could be fascinating. Any indications would be highly appreciated. All the best, Efrén del Valle ___________________________________________________ Yahoo! It's probably worth getting, though the vocals are rather cheesy and period-specific. Ayler plays bagpipes on Masonic Inborn, the longest track on the recording, and the CD has some really nice moments. Bobby Few sticks out in particular. The only real R&B track is the last one, Drudgery, and it isn't all that painful. But like Ken Waxman, I can pretty well live without Mary Maria who basically ruins tracks like "A Man Is Like a Tree" and "Island Harvest" with her cliché ridden vocals.
