RE: So Much Balkan Fun: Shantel, _Bucovina Club_ (Essay Recordings)
Isn't Fanfare Ciocarlia on there as well?
I thought of them too while reading Stephen's message. They're such an incredible group. My fave album is their first one, which runs at a frantical pace, no mercy. Highly recommended for fans of Balkan flavors with some aggresivity thrown in.
True, their first album - Radio Pascani - is the best, the most 'pure' and 'raw' (whatever that means). Second and third CD are wonderful too, but a little bit more polished. Their label Piranha has lots of other nice releases too by the way, including a Klezmer recording by Frank London. Yes, the Klezmer Brass Allstars or something like that. One of the few albums by London that I've really enjoyed. If my memory serves me, it was all traditional Jewish tunes and, as the name of the band says, it was a large group of brass and percussion with a heavy reeds sound and mid to uptempos. Funny and great melodies. Best, Efrén del Valle ___________________________________________________ Yahoo!
