I'd go to the archives for this, but I don't think it's been covered all that recently... Would anybody care to recommend favorite Merzbow recordings? After years of apprehensive ignorance (less apprehensive of the content than the risk of initiating another expensive collecting habit), I finally caught Merzbow last Saturday night at Tonic, sandwiched between an opening set by Borbetomagus and an after hours set by Burkhard Stangl & dieb13 (whose new 'eh' on Erstwhile is wonderful, BTW). The 'Merzbox' aside (obviously!), which in-print Merzbow recordings provide a good introduction to his recorded work? And which rarities are worth stalking eBay for? Or is Merzbow simply better experienced live? Steve Smith ssmith36@sprynet.com NP - Evan Parker & Paul Lytton, "Shaker," 'Collective Calls (Urban) (Two Microphones)' (Psi)

I'd definitely go with the Music for Bondage Performance volumes on Extreme for starters. After that, I'd take Venerology and the aforementioned 1930 on Tzadik. I also quite like Amlux and A Taste of Merzbow on Mego.

Borbetomagus was (were?) Borbetomagus, and decades after their primal eruptions, that's probably more than enough. They were so fucking overwhelmingly volcanic seismic eruptive etc. that for the first 10 minutes of Merzbow's set, my friends and I thought it was easy listening by comparison. We took out our gol-darned earplugs, by criminy. Of course, THAT didn't last long. I ought to mention, by the way, that there was a pretty professional looking multi-camera crew shooting through the Borbs' and Merzbow's sets. No idea why, but I'm sure someone somewhere knows.
