Re: JZ's Original 80's COBRA recordings ltd reissue
it wasn´t Swiss government but UBS (formerly Swiss Bank Corporation). Perhaps there´s no great difference or the first are the employees of the latter? Andreas np: Yosuke Yamashita - Bolero (Enja)

Anyways, don't miss out! Hat editions come and go very quickly, and now that the label has lost its funding from the Swiss government, it's uncertain that they will be around to again re-issue this in the future.

I hope some of the Swiss ZornListers can help out, but my take on the Swiss funding system is, that every corporation that makes any profit, is obliged to donate to Swiss culture. So in the case of Hat Art cd's, the government made UBS choose where they should invest/ donate their percentage of profit. Good choice, huh? Too bad it stopped, though. I really like this idea of funding. Not only avantgarde art gets support that way, also mainstream jazz label TCB benefits from these 'culture laws'. I live next to Switzerland, still I don't know about the laws for sure. Since Switzerland is very proud of its democratic system, the fact that they are politically "neutral" (sp?), I find it hard to believe that such a funding system would be possible. There are however some very big corporations that voluntarily put quite a bit of money into arts/music. (The most famous and established one in Switzerland being supermarket chain Migros.) patRice np: Jeff Mills, From The 21st nr: Christopher Moore, Minor Wife
This reminds me of something that puzzles me about the USA - a lot of people made lots of money during the Internet boom, and I'm sure some of those new millionaires are fans of avant-garde music, but I haven't seen any foundations supporting the avant music scene. Yes, I know, a lot of that money is gone now, but I personally know a few people who cashed out at the right time alongside a bunch who did not. Before Patrice beats me down, let me say that I don't think that, say, AMM deserve someone's money because they are obscure. But if I wound up with a few million dollars in my lap, one of my main priorities would be to put some of my money into a foundation to fund the activities of artists I like. 01:58 PM 7/23/2002 +0200, you wrote:

A gander at the recent Forced Exposure or Anomalous lists shows dozens if not hundreds of small labels releasing music by people who, if not unknown, are only known within a similar niche to many of the artists we discuss. How do we know that some of these aren't started by people who made it big five years ago? If *I* wound up with a few million dollars, I could certainly spread it around without any promotion or advertisement. As long as we're on the thread of the Hat Cobra recordings, let me put in a small recommendation for anyone who doesn't already have them. The live disc has some vocal comments by JZ, and enough long excerpts to see how the piece evolves, plus a collection of great musicians. I've been listening to the Tzadik Cobra today, and I could swear there's a guitar in there somewhere (other than Derek Bailey). It's nice that there's a number of good Cobra recordings out there, it definitely gives a sense of the range of the piece. -- Caleb Deupree cdeupree@erinet.com
