Reynols @ Worm, Rotterdam 4. Broadcast, somewhere in Rotterdam 5. Mastodon @ Effenaar, Eindhoven 6. Thrones/Sunn O)))/Isis @ Kontich, Belgium 7. John Zorn's Electric Masada @ Blue Note Festival, Ghent, Belgium 8. Prong @ Effenaar, Eindhoven 9. Melt-Banana @ Paradiso, Amsterdam 10. Naked City @ Theater Carre, Amsterdam In fact, I thought the Electric Masada show was WAY better than the Naked City gig. The NC gig was under-rehearsed to say the least. It was Mike Patton's finest hour, but I really couldn't get into Frisell's playing. I walked out of his gig at the Blue Note Festival in Ghent a couple of weeks later. The worst concert of the year, though, was Tomahawk @ Paradiso, Amsterdam. Never before have I seen Patton performing so badly. Frankco
here are my favorites that i bought in 2003 (they might've been released in 2002 or earlier) and favorite concerts: (sorry for incorrect english and incomplete listings - don't have the time to look it all up - hope this won't upset some people on this list :-)) - désormais (intr_version)- beautiful combination of laptop-electronics with guitardrones and other instruments - mitchell akyama (raster noton) - minimal electronics - high chill-out factor - biosphere: shenzou (touch records) again an minimal ambient classic from this dude - chris watson: weather report it's like national geographic on cd without the comments (come to think of it, somebody should put david attenborough on cd versus tremendous sound scapes) - raphe malik quartet: companions (eremite)- the first time i heard anything from this guy but it shure ain't the last. freejazz with balls. high spirits. - senking (on karaoke kalk) - supercool clicks&cuts-shit electronics. - spring heel jack: amassed (thirsty ear) - tribes of neurot: the 2-cd with drones from insect-sounds as source-material - Pelt: the 2cd on VHF-records best concerts: - Zu (brussels, opwijk, gent) - the best energetic adrenalin punk-freejazz (or freejazzpunk?) you can get - Louis Sclavis trio in Gent (Napoli's Waltz) - it was supposed to be a quartet but sclavis explained the trumpet player fell of the stage and broke two ribs:-) - The Ex (Dour-festival) - FM Einheit & Caspar Brotzmann (dour-festival)(doing an improv set with bricks, chains and distortion guitars in the afternoon on a rock-festival ... you have to have the guts do it!) - the Melvins (dour-festival) - Alec Empire (dour-festival) - very cool electronics, no 'atari teenage'-like stuff but very mature focussed beats and soundscapes - Peter Brötzmann trio (Antwerp, Hasselt) - incredible - fourtet (brussels) - it was sounded more like amon tobin than fourtet. pretty beat-oriented set, quite dark and powerfull - Merzbow (brussels): pure waves of noise with grumbling low basses underneath - very strong - very loud (free after-concert for two days ...) - jablkon (eeklo) - charming czech (avant?)folk - sunroof! (hasselt) - weird lofi-guitar wall-of-sound drones - radian (brussels) - drums-bas-electronics - 'difficult postrock' or whatever - frank london klezmer all stars (brussels) - tied+tickled trio (Brussels) - - tuxedomoon (brussels) - these guys are still magic ... nice combination of their best older stuff and new material. beautifull that's it. Tonight I'm going to an Unsane-concert (anu Unsane fans on this list). I thought this cool band (who made the best hardcore-noise-guitar music) was already a long time dead & burried but 2003 seemed to be the year of the rëunions Cheers, nice weekend, Sven ________________________________________________________________________ BT Yahoo!
