And by "not quite" I really mean "not at all".... If any of you Ken Vandermark fans missed his performance at Chicago's Jazz Fest, you missed something wonderful. If for just the cellist alone (a fella by the name of Fred Lonberg-Holm.... check him out!), and they were all very approachable after the set. The group was the standard Vandermark 5 with a guest bassist, cellist, cornet, second drummer and another set of reeds. They played a 45-minute set, three pieces. And then some more traditional musicians went up and played standards for the rest of the night, as is Jazz Fest's M.O. I think. But each year (thankfully) there's one good act in Grant Park. Masada was the crowning point of 1999 for me. And seeing George Lewis (the man is HUGE!) last year was a treat. _________________________________________________________________ Express yourself with MSN Messenger 6.0 -- download now! http://www.msnmessenger-download.com/tracking/reach_general

I look forward to see Vandermark 5 playing 5 shows in a row in Krakow next year... Every time Ken comes to Poland I "chase" him show after show, it's an amazing experience to see how the music is evolving from one concert to another. I guess he is one of the very few _working_ jazz musicians, who make this music living... BTW, if anyone can see Territory Band live - you have to go. I saw them at Jazzfest in Berlin, the lineup was including Kevin Drumm (does anyone heard of him? He is quite well received in Poland), this was a fantastic concert. Everyone who is disappointed with recent light-surf-songs from Zorn, should check Territory Band... __________________________________________________________________ Artur Nowak [.com]
