Hi Ben, I haven't seen the DVD release, but I saw a projection of this film here in Barcelona two years ago(I've seen only the first 4 hours), and it was very disappointing, a collection of witnesses of the holocaust during more than 9 hours!!?, yes , really hard stories, but nothing more. In my opinion the most easier and worse way to do a documentary. I found it extremely pretentious and really absurd, so in conclusion the film offers an extended catalog of torture and pain stories and really doesn't explain anything about the holocaust. Sure the worst documentary I've seen in years. You better get the Andrzej Munk's incompleted masterpiece "The Passanger" although it isn't a documentary is the best film about the holocaust, in only an hour this film says all that a film can say about this, in difference of shoah ,this film accept that the life on a concentration camp is something unfilmmeable so the story is explained through a hangman's memories.One of the greatest film's history. Another masterpiece, and this is a documentary, is Alain Resnais' "Nigh and Fog" now available on DVD at Criterion Collection, but I can't say anything about this half hour film, superb in all its aspects, you have to see it to believe it. Only a frame of some of these two films is equivalent to more than the 9 and a half hours of shoah. I'm curious as to whether the DVD release is worth the price. Amazon lists it for $135, which seems insanely high for a 4-disc box set ($33+/disc).
