Hello Z-Listers, Over the last two years or so i have begun an incursion into the musical worlds of Jazz, Classical and the so-called Avant Guard. Before my interests lay mostly in stuff like Zappa, the Dead, Phish, "classic" Rock, my parents old record collection (Beatles folk & 60's stuff) etc. Anyways, the last two years i have opened my mind to a great deal of new music. In doing so i have also opened my wallet. I spend a great deal of my money on Cds and have thoroughly enjoyed many of the recs that i have picked up on from the List. Which leads me to my query. Would any of you be so kind as to rec a "guide" of sorts? For example i saw a reasonably priced Penguin Guide to Jazz at a nearby record shop recently. Is this a reasonably reliable source? Or should i seek out another one? Granted i realize that none are perfect or all-inclusive, but perhaps some of you could rec some that are better than others. These days i use allmusic.com. Its not terrible, but i'd like a coffee table book or two to supplement it. I imagine i would get alot out of something like that. Being 23, most of my peers are a waste of time for discovering new and interesting music. Generally they are more interested in MTV than ICP, for example. Thanks alot, Adam _________________________________________________________________ Protect your PC - get McAfee.com VirusScan Online http://clinic.mcafee.com/clinic/ibuy/campaign.asp?cid=3963

The All Music Guide has been really helpful to/for me, because the people who review for them tend to know what they're talking about. Plus, it's online and pretty exhaustive.

When the Knit first opened up here in LA, they advertised the ICP playing in the main space. When Mengelberg and Co showed up, a great many Insane Clown Posse fans were demanding their money back. sh

At an Ellery Eskelin show in Barcelona, two guys were wondering why the former F. Zappa drummer hadn't finally showed up. It's the same the whole world over! The EE Trio is fantastic, but there does not seem to be an Indian Of The Group.

Mengelberg and Co. didn't show up, they played in Bonnie Barnett's living room instead. ICP fans of all designations demanded (and received) their money back.

And they have a very reverent biography of Skip Heller...
too reverent. that Heller SOB should be making cappucino at a Starbuck's instead of wasting everybody's time. Who does he think he's fooling?
