Zorn's output & the nature of collecting
I am simply amazed and overwhelmed in how many recordings Zorn puts out. There is no way in heaven or hell I can afford all of his recordings (and that is Zorn himself, not even counting the rest of the artists on his label). The recordings of the one's I like I go back and listen to a lot. So in a sense I never get bored or tired with 'my favorite Zorn' records. Also so far I avoided the live Naked City because I don't want to rehash the same songs over again - but that maybe a mistake on my part. The live recording may have a certain intensity or 'feel' that is not on the studio recording. I am presuming that Zorn himself is a collector - and I think he treats his label and recordings with that collecting mentality in mind. My guess is that if he likes an artist - he would have everything by that artist. So with that in mind, I think Zorn offers his audience the same opportunity to own everything of his work. Hopefully in January, I will be putting out Boris Vian's L'Ecume des jours (Foam of the Daze), and one of the main characters in the novel is a hardcore collector of Jean-Paul Sartre's books, personal papers, his clothing, everything. It eventually causes that character's downfall. I think of collecting as a powerful drug like existence - which is something I have to be careful with. But now I am getting off the subject....
